Being a stay at home mum with a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old means lots of hours in the day you need to fill with stimulating activities for their young brains. You all know me to well and know I love a good DIY, and the kids (especially Ari) love to help me. Now letting them handle power tools may not always be an option but there are lots of things you can do with them that they can join in with and have fun creating. If we’re being honest half of these projects look like a dog’s dinner if I “leg go” of my need to control but of course we all know that the most fun is in the activity itself and not the end result. Further down you will see my pom-pom fail.

Last week Ari and I went along to the Spotlight Craft Month opening and had a heap of fun. Here are some of the things we got up to:

As soon as we got there Ari and new bae’s ran around the huge balloon sculpture. I mean why wouldn’t you, I was tempted myself.

Then we decorated cupcakes over at the Roberts cake stand. Oh and then casually ATE THEM ALL!

Roberts have developed a cake mix that bakes with a flat top! No more waste or mess cutting off the tops of your cakes. They come out of the oven pretty and neat, ready to decorate. I am definitely heading down to buy a pack and have a go for Ari’s birthday cake next week.

Then we headed over to check out Patons, where I saw this gorgeous handmade poncho that inspired me to grab a few balls of yarn (is that the right way to say it?). After the pom-pom flop I will not be attempting to make this poncho.

Then we got to meet an Alpaca because that was necessary for us to feel where the yarn came from…..

fuelled my obsession with pretty papers.

So there were lots more cool activities to do but I don’t want to spoil it for you all. Through the entire month of March 2017, Spotlight is celebrating National Craft Month with the aim to inspire you all to join in the “Make It Yourself” movement. Now here was my crafty ATTEMPT to make a pom-pom garland. Maybe I did it wrong but I went by memory from primary school (maybe I should have watched some YouTube clips). It’s not the prettiest thing in the world but we made it together and my son got to play with a sharp item so he was stoked.

and this was the final result:
