Ok you guys, so last night I went to Circus 1903. I am not easily impressed when it comes to a Circus but I would go and see this again without the kids it was that good. Ambrosia didn’t blink for the first 15 minutes, I think, and Ari was enthralled the whole way through as was I! My husband, who usually complains about getting dragged along was also raving about it on the drive home.
What makes it different is a few things…. There are no live animals in the show, just a few furry friends (bearded men), so you won’t spend the night feeling guilty and wondering what those poor animals have been through to do such tricks, the two amazing life-sized elephants (that are puppets) and the theatrical aspect of it all.
The costumes and set are all amazing and set in time of 1903, the music was so perfect and well-timed that every cliffhanger was so much more exciting and the lights made it easy for my kids to follow along where they should be focusing.
I think the first part that had me holding my breath and with a knot in my throat was the guy that does the balancing act (so technical I know) so I hate to say this but I was CERTAIN he was going to fall!! Those rolling barrel things he was on were rolling so close to the edge I was cringing but couldn’t look away, then I clapped like a maniac when he made it safely.
Then the contortionists, SWEET BABY JESUS! She was like a piece of chewing gum, I imagined the skills she would have as a mother, she could pick up a nappy with her teeth via a back bend and then thread through her own legs to throw it in the bin, simultaneously using a toe to pop the wipes back in the draw…. ok sorry I got sidetracked.
The rest of the acts were great too, my son is now begging me to try the flips the Italian brothers got up to together. I also have to special mention the host, now usually the ringmaster is neither here nor there and not really important but this guy had me in stitches during crowd participation with the kids (I don’t want to spoil it for you) and I think the lady in the row behind me surely trickled some wee….actually I’m pretty certain of that.
It’s such a shame they’re only here for 9 more days but the good part is THERE’S 9 MORE DAYS!!! So book! if you didn’t see my previous post its at the Regent Theatre, which is so impressive it really sets the tone from the moment you walk through the doors.
Here are some more pics of the show.
